If you’re looking to grow vegetables yourself, why not consider some stem crops? Vegetables such as leeks, celery, asparagus and onion all fall into this category. Stem crops are edible plants cultivated specifically for their taste and nutritional quality of the main body of the plant, the stem.
It’s easy to grow stem crops from seed. For example, get hold of one of the varieties of leek seed and sow them into a prepared seed bed. They take a while to reach maturity, around six or seven months, but they’re hardy and well-suited to a cool environment. Leeks are one of the more versatile stem crops available. They’re great in soup or stews, and they make a fantastic addition to stir-fries.
Celery Vegetable Seeds
Perhaps you’d prefer to start with some celery seed. This is one of the stem crops that are popular in salads. Succulent and tasty, celery stems are also good for soups and chutney. Celery seed is usually sown under glass and take 4-5 months to grow, needing to the transplanted into the out doors in early summer.
